{"id":1461,"date":"2024-08-05T22:59:53","date_gmt":"2024-08-05T22:59:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ocean.edu\/?page_id=1461"},"modified":"2026-02-26T20:26:34","modified_gmt":"2026-02-27T01:26:34","slug":"emergency-closing","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.ocean.edu\/faculty-staff\/emergency-closing\/","title":{"rendered":"Emergency Closings"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns alignwide is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-1 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>College Closing Procedures<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-intro\">Closure of the main campus and OCC Manahawkin due to inclement weather or other emergency will be announced according to the following schedule:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>By 6:00 a.m.<\/strong>&nbsp;to announce a closing for the day or a delayed opening<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>By 10:00 a.m.<\/strong>&nbsp;for afternoon classes and activities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>By 2:00 p.m.<\/strong>&nbsp;for evening classes and activities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<p><a href=\"#early-dismissal\">Early Dismissal<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"#site-closings\">Site Closings<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"#radios-tv\">Radio and TV Stations<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns alignwide is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-2 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br><strong>Delayed Opening<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the event that a&nbsp;<strong>DELAYED OPENING<\/strong>&nbsp;occurs in the middle of a class period, students and faculty are advised that if your class has one hour or longer of instruction\/lab\/studio time remaining \u2013 your class&nbsp;<strong>WILL<\/strong>&nbsp;meet. For example, your class meets from 11:00 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. There is a 12:00 noon delayed opening. Your class&nbsp;<strong>WILL<\/strong>&nbsp;meet for the remainder of the class period from 12:00 to 1:45 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, if your class has less than one hour of instruction\/lab\/studio time remaining \u2013 your class will&nbsp;<strong>NOT<\/strong>&nbsp;meet. For example, your class meets from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. There is a 10:00 a.m. delayed opening. Your class will&nbsp;<strong>NOT<\/strong>&nbsp;meet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns alignwide is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-3 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"early-dismissal\"><strong>Early Dismissal<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the event that an&nbsp;<strong>EARLY DISMISSAL<\/strong>&nbsp;occurs in the middle of a class period, students and faculty are advised that if your class has one hour or longer of instruction\/lab\/studio time before the early dismissal \u2013 your class&nbsp;<strong>WILL<\/strong>&nbsp;meet. For example, your class meets from 2:00 to 3:15 p.m. There is a 3:00 p.m. early dismissal. Your class&nbsp;<strong>WILL<\/strong>&nbsp;meet from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, if your class has less than one hour of instruction\/lab\/studio time before the early dismissal \u2013 your class will&nbsp;<strong>NOT<\/strong>&nbsp;meet. For example, your class meets from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. There is a 1:00 p.m. early dismissal. Your class will&nbsp;<strong>NOT<\/strong>&nbsp;meet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns alignwide is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-4 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"site-closings\"><strong>Site Closings<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If the College closes, one of the following will occur:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The class will move to remote instruction and students will be expected to attend the class via WebEx during the normal class meeting time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Instructor will provide instruction and assignments via Canvas. Students will be expected to log in to the course via Canvas to view the assignments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Your instructors will let you know which option applies to your course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the College closes,&nbsp;<strong>OCC Manahawkin<\/strong>&nbsp;will close, unless an emergency requires unique closing decisions at either the Toms River or Manahawkin location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the College is closed,&nbsp;OCC\u2019s&nbsp;<strong>Off-Campus<\/strong>&nbsp;classes will be held remotely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the College is open but an off-campus site is closed,&nbsp;<strong>Off-Campus<\/strong>&nbsp;classes at that site will be cancelled.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns alignwide is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-5 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Emergency closing information will be available via:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Viking Alert: Register or update your Viking Alert account at&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/ocean.sendwordnow.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ocean.sendwordnow.com<\/a>&nbsp;to receive text alerts, email or voicemail messages.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The college home page:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ocean.edu\/\" title=\"A Community of Belonging\">ocean.edu<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A recorded message on the main college phone line:&nbsp;<a href=\"tel:732.255.0400\">732.255.0400<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Radio &amp; TV stations.
